NABA has established a wide range of programs specifically developed to assist accounting and finance professionals in achieving their career goals. Each program is geared towards nurturing the relationship between the business community and the Association at large.

NABA's official motto is "Lifting As We Climb." We urge you to join us in this effort by becoming a member of the premier association for African-American business professionals.

NABA Houston offers the following programs annually:

Professional Development

For the NABA Professional, the chapter holds activities focused on personal and professional enhancement. General Body meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month (except on holidays or otherwise noted) in the form of seminars and workshops that offer CPE credits and value added information, as well as networking events that provide opportunities for our members to interact professionally and socially with other professional organizations.

Division Of Firms

The Division of Firms (DOF) was established in 1986 as part of the national organizational structure of NABA. The mission of the DOF is to address the professional needs of its member firms and to foster the economic development of these firms in the business community at both the local and national levels. The objective of the DOF is to elevate and maintain among its members a high standard of proficiency and integrity through the enforcement of the AICPA's code of ethics and professional development; to promote the economic growth of minority firms by providing a forum for advocacy, teamwork, honest exchange of information; and to cultivate a spirit of professional cooperation among its members.

Mentoring

Our Mentorship Program is critical in our efforts to successfully prepare our students for a career in business. The Student Affairs Committee heads the Mentorship Program and is responsible for identifying motivated professional and student members interested in participating in the program. To ensure quality matches between Professional Mentors and Student Mentees, the committee utilizes questionnaires and pairs professionals and students based on personal interests, experiences and professional goals. The Committee plans several events throughout the year including a kick off meeting and several social/cultural outings.

Annual Scholarship & Awards Banquet

NABA Houston is pleased to host an annual scholarship and awards event. Each year, the chapter gives out scholarships on behalf of our devoted corporate sponsors and the NABA Houston Endowment. Scholarships are awarded to local high school and college students to recognize outstanding academic accomplishments. This is also an opportunity to highlight individuals who have contributed to the community and to recognize the contributions of our corporate supporters.

Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP)

Endorsed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Certified Public Accountants Society of Executives Association, and various State Societies of CPAs, ACAP is an annual one-week summer residency program for high school students held at a local college or university and is designed to promote awareness of accounting, finance and other business professions. Students have the opportunity to earn scholarships towards their college education. Other program aspects include corporate tours, career development, financial planning, networking, and college preparation. NABA Houston is currently planning for the second annual ACAP. If you are interested in joining these efforts, please contact Candice Elliott at acap@nabahouston.org. ACAP Committee Meetings typically will be held on Saturdays. We will meet every other month.

Western Region Student Conference

NABA's Western Region Student Conference is one of the largest and most diverse student conferences. It has brought together hundreds of professional and student members, academicians, and corporate representatives over the years. While the focus of the Conference is primarily on career development and job placement, there are many opportunities to have fun as well. At the conferences, students can interview for internships and permanent positions, in addition to attending interactive sessions on topics such as: Developing Dynamic Interviewing Skills, Dress for Success, and Transitioning from College Student to Business Professional. This year, the Student Conference will be held at the Houston Renaissance Greenway Plaza. Don't miss this opportunity to plan one of the largest events of the region. If you are interested please contact Wendy Lewis or Robbyn Johnson at swchair@nabawr.org. For more information, please visit the regional website, www.nabawr.org.

Financial Literacy

NABA recognizes the importance of financial education, especially in the African-American and underserved communities and we plan to improve financial literacy and increase comprehension of finance by providing basic financial tools to allow individuals to establish and realize their financial goals. The more people know about credit and banking services, the more likely they are to increase savings, buy homes, and improve their financial health and well being.   NABA’s financial education program focuses budgeting, financial goal setting, investing, managing credit & debt, and saving. The program will help build financial knowledge and develop financial confidence.  If you would like more information about this program, please contact us at nabahouston@nabahouston.org.
